Type 2 Diabetes- Information and Resources
Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin and gradually loses the capacity to produce enough insulin in the pancreas. The condition has strong genetic and family-related (non-modifiable) risk factors and is also often associated with modifiable lifestyle risk factors. We do not know the exact genetic causes of type 2 diabetes. People may be able to significantly slow or even stop the progression of the condition through changes to diet and increasing the amount of physical activity they do.

Healthy Diet for Diabetes
Healthy eating is an important part of managing your diabetes, so you need to be aware of what, when and how much you eat every day. Eating a healthy diet helps to keep your blood glucose levels within your target range, which reduces the risk of developing diabetes-related complications. There is no such thing as a diabetic diet. Diabetes Australia recommends that everyone with diabetes visit an accredited practising dietitian for individualised dietary advice. Dietitians are accessible and are usually based in many local hospitals, diabetes centres and community health centres. You can consult a dietitian in-person, by telephone or by telehealth (a video call). Medicare may provide a rebate on dietitians’ fees if you have a chronic condition, like diabetes, and are referred by your doctor under a Chronic Disease Management Plan. If you have private health insurance you may also receive a rebate from your health fund, depending on the type of cover you have.

The DANII Foundation was formed in 2012 after the tragic unnecessary death of Type One Diabetic (T1D), Daniella Meads Barlow at the age of 17 as a result of nocturnal hypoglycaemia, Dead in Bed Syndrome (DIBS). DANII is Australia’s pre-eminent foundation for the prevention of life threatening Dead in Bed Syndrome (DIBS) and the only organisation dedicated solely to the improvement of the safety and quality of the lives of T1D’s.
